In its latest report on U.S. naturalization policy on April 15, the Independent Congressional Research Service estimated that 969,380 people became U.S. citizens in fiscal year 2022.


"People born in Mexico make up the largest population, followed by people from India, the Philippines, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic," the report states.


Based on the most recent data available, CRS stated that up to 128,878 Mexican nationals will become U.S. citizens in 2022. This was followed by Indians (65,960), Filipinos (53,413), Cuba (46,913), Dominican Republic (34,525), Vietnam (33,246), and China (27,038). ).


According to the CRS, there were 2,831,330 foreign-born American citizens from India in 2023, making him the second-highest number of foreign-born Americans after Mexico's 10,638,429. Mexico and India are followed by China, with 2,225,447 foreign-born Americans.


By 2023, up to 290,000 Indian-born foreign nationals holding green cards or legal permanent residence (LPR) could be eligible for naturalization.


In recent years, some observers have expressed concern about the backlog of naturalization applications by USCIS. Although the backlog of naturalization applications continues, the agency has reduced the number of completed applications by more than half since fiscal 2020.
